When I posted the Burndown template, I promised that next template would be Burnup template. Unlike Burndown which shows remaining effort (stories etc.) to reach the goal, Burnup chart shows the effort spent (stories etc.) to reach the goal.
Both have their own pros and cons and both have their own utilities. In my view, in Agile Project Management, both should be used while staying away from trying to prove the superiority of one over the other.
In this template, I am not constraining the look and feel to only one type of Burnup Chart rather I am giving 4 different looks and feels. You can use which one do you want to use.
How to Use this Template
On the first tab, you can choose the name for your legends – Scope Planned, Scope Completed, Ideal Burnup are defaults. You can change it to as per your requirements.
Input tab can be used to input data. You can use this for a single iteration or for multiple iterations.
In column A – You can put the dates. If a weekend is inputted, it will be highlighted in Orange to let you know that a weekend date has been chosen. Required validation that only a date can be entered has been put in.
In column B – You can put your Scope say Stories or Effort. The effort will be total effort for the Sprint / Iteration. If the Scope / Effort changes, you should change this as of that date.
In Column C – You need to input the Stories / Effort completed as on that date (This is not a cumulative value). The validations put here are following –
Column C input can not be greater than Column B.
Total of Column C can not be greater than that last entry of column B which is the final Scope.
Hi,
Thanks for sharing this template. I tried using it for a 3 weeks sprint; however I noticed that burnup chart X axis only shows date labels up to 10 days. Could you kindly help fix it?
Thanks
need to unprotect the sheets. password please?
Thank you so much for this! It's helped me out with shortcomings in JIRA software no end.
Having completed one chart, I've copied the chart and input to create new sheets and amended the data as required – though this time the 'Ideal Burnup' bar is:
a) not going to the top corner of the graph as expected
b) not displaying any numbers as per the original
Would you be able to make any suggestions?
Thank you again!
Hi there, great burn-up charts.
Is there a way for the 'total effort' line to start at 0 on the Y axis, just that it seems it takes the highest common value in the Scope/Stories column and starts the line at that value. starting at 0 would be more logical, as your total Scope/Stories should grow over time. Thanks.
My mistake, it's a sprint burn-up chart, not a project burn-up chart. Sprint burn-up's would not start at 0.
I want to added make some additions but use yours as the base chart. The problem is I need the password – can you send that to me.
Thanks
Hello. Can you forward me the password?

How do you calculate the Velocity Average to build the Ideal line? Do you use Average of last 3 Sprints?
Could we have a filed to change this Average (for some of our teams we use 5 Sprints average)?
Hello, can I please get the password for the Macro?
If you are giving it out, I would also like the password.
